Overview

The New Zealand eTA for Swedish citizens

Sweden sends a disproportionate number of long-stay travellers to New Zealand. The working holiday route is heavily used, gap-year and post-university travel is culturally embedded, and Swedish visitors are among the most likely of any nationality to spend two or three months touring rather than a fortnight.

Stockholm has no nonstop service to New Zealand. Every itinerary runs through a Gulf or Asian hub, or occasionally through a US west coast city, with total journey times of around 27 to 31 hours.

Sweden is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so there is no visitor visa and no appointment at a New Zealand mission. Since October 2019 every traveller needs an NZeTA — an online authorisation linked to your passport number and checked by the airline at Arlanda before departure.

Eligibility

Do Swedish citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

No visa, but an NZeTA is required. Swedish citizens can enter New Zealand for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, conferences or transit for up to 90 days under the visa waiver.

Sweden has a Working Holiday arrangement with New Zealand for applicants aged 18 to 30, granting twelve months with the right to work. It is heavily used by Swedish travellers and is a separate visa applied for before departure — an NZeTA gives no right to work and cannot be converted after arrival.

Eligibility follows the passport rather than residence. Residents of Sweden holding Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian, Somali or Eritrean passports are not covered by the Swedish waiver and need a New Zealand Visitor Visa, which takes considerably longer. A Swedish permanent residence permit carries no weight with Immigration New Zealand.

Stay & validity

How long can Swedish citizens stay in New Zealand?

Swedish passport holders may stay up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA lasts two years from approval and permits unlimited entries in that window, so the cap applies to each individual stay rather than an annual total.

Because Swedish trips run long, the 90-day ceiling is a real planning constraint rather than a formality. A full campervan circuit plus time in the Southern Alps can approach it, and extensions are not automatic — a longer stay needs a Visitor Visa applied for from inside New Zealand before your existing permission expires.

The authorisation is bound to one passport number for two years. Swedish passports run for five years, which makes a renewal inside the NZeTA's life quite likely, and there is no way to transfer it to a new document.

New Zealand requires three months of passport validity beyond your departure from the country. Swedish routings through Dubai, Doha or Singapore may face a stricter rule in the transit country, so plan against the strictest requirement on the whole itinerary.

Requirements

New Zealand eTA requirements for Swedish citizens

Everything Swedish passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together

Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave

Specific to Swedish passport holders

  • A valid Swedish passport with at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Your name entered exactly as printed, with å, ä and ö rendered as the machine-readable zone shows them
  • A recent colour photograph with your full face visible against a plain light background
  • A credit or debit card to pay the request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together
  • An email address you can access while travelling, since the approval is delivered there only
  • Truthful answers to the character questions, covering convictions carrying five years or more at any time and convictions in the last ten years carrying twelve months or more
  • Disclosure of any deportation, removal or refusal of entry from any country
  • Onward or return travel details, which border officers at Auckland can ask to see
  • Residents of Sweden holding a non-waiver passport must apply for a Visitor Visa on their own nationality
  • Every traveller needs their own NZeTA, including children and infants

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Swedish requests are approved automatically in most cases, often within minutes. Immigration New Zealand advises allowing up to 72 hours because a proportion are referred for manual assessment, usually over a photograph the automated check cannot read.

Apply at least a week before departure. Swedish passports are valid for only five years, so before requesting an NZeTA it is worth checking whether a renewal is due within the next two years — requesting it on a passport about to be replaced means paying twice.

Getting there

Flying to New Zealand from Sweden

There is no nonstop service between Sweden and New Zealand. Stockholm Arlanda connects through the Gulf carriers, Singapore and Hong Kong, with Copenhagen and Helsinki offering additional Nordic options for travellers in the south and east.

  • Stockholm (ARN) via Dubai or Doha — Emirates and Qatar Airways to Auckland
  • Stockholm via Singapore — Singapore Airlines to Auckland or Christchurch
  • Stockholm via Helsinki — Finnair to Asia, then onward to Auckland
  • Stockholm via Copenhagen or Amsterdam to a Gulf hub
  • Gothenburg and Malmö — connect through Stockholm, Copenhagen or Amsterdam
27–31 hours total from Stockholm with one or two stops

Best time to go

When to travel from Sweden

New Zealand's summer of December to February is the mirror of the Swedish winter, and the contrast — long daylight and warm coastal weather against the darkest weeks at home — is the single biggest draw. It is peak season, so campervans, campsites and Great Walk huts are booked out well ahead.

February to April is the best-value window for a long trip: settled autumn weather, thinning crowds after the New Zealand school holidays, and available campsites. October and November work similarly in spring.

The Swedish summer of June to August falls in the New Zealand winter — good for skiing at Queenstown and Wanaka, quiet elsewhere, but with short daylight that Swedish travellers coming from the midnight sun find a jarring reversal. New Zealand is 10 to 12 hours ahead of Sweden depending on daylight saving in both countries.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Swedish citizens make

Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from Sweden — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Renewing a five-year passport mid-validity

Swedish passports run for only five years, the shortest of any Nordic country, so a renewal inside an NZeTA's two-year life is common. The authorisation does not transfer to the new passport number, and the mismatch surfaces at the Arlanda check-in desk.

Arriving on an NZeTA intending to work

The Working Holiday Scheme is heavily used by Swedish travellers and must be granted before departure. Picking up seasonal work in Marlborough or Central Otago on a visitor entry is a breach that can result in removal and a re-entry ban.

Swedish characters entered as printed

The machine-readable zone renders å and ä as A and ö as O. The NZeTA must match that encoded version rather than the accented printed form, because that is what airline systems compare against.

A trip that quietly exceeds 90 days

Swedish itineraries are long by European standards, and a full two-island tour plus a Pacific side trip can drift past three months. The 90-day cap is hard, and overstaying creates an immigration record that affects future travel worldwide.

Passport number mistyped

By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.

An undeclared conviction

Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.

A photograph that fails the check

Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.

Conditions

NZeTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

The NZeTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.

One request per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.

Valid for two years, multiple entry

An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.

The IVL is paid at the same time

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.

Cruise arrivals need one too

Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.

Consular services

New Zealand missions in Sweden

The Embassy in Stockholm is New Zealand's mission for the Nordic region, and it plays no part in an NZeTA request — the process is entirely online with no appointment and no passport submission. It handles work visas, student visas, residence applications and consular services for New Zealanders across the region.

FAQs

New Zealand eTA FAQs for Swedish citizens

The questions Swedish passport holders ask most often about travelling to New Zealand.

No visitor visa is required — Sweden is on New Zealand's visa waiver list. You do need an NZeTA, requested online before departure and checked by the airline at Arlanda. It covers stays of up to 90 days for tourism, family visits, business meetings and transit.

Up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA is valid for two years and allows unlimited entries in that period, but each individual stay is capped at 90 days. Only British citizens receive a longer allowance.

Probably. Swedish passports are only valid for five years, and an NZeTA lasts two years tied to one passport number. Requesting it on a passport that will be replaced within the window means paying for a second NZeTA after the renewal.

The cost is the government request fee plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100, both charged together. The pricing panel on this page loads the live all-in figure for Swedish passport holders including our service fee.

No. Swedish citizens aged 18 to 30 can apply for the Working Holiday Scheme, giving twelve months with the right to work, but it is a separate visa that must be approved before you travel.

Use the version in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport photo page, which renders å and ä as A and ö as O. That is what airline systems compare your NZeTA against at check-in.
