Overview

The US ESTA for Czech citizens

Czechs are enthusiastic long-haul travellers for a landlocked nation of ten and a half million, and America sits high on the list. The typical trip is ambitious: a hire car collected in Las Vegas, a loop through Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon, and a few nights in San Francisco or Los Angeles at the end. New York city breaks and Florida winters make up much of the rest.

The Czech Republic was designated into the Visa Waiver Program in 2008, one of a group of Central European states admitted that year. From then on the visa interview at the embassy below Prague Castle was replaced, for ordinary visits, by an ESTA: an electronic authorisation from U.S. Customs and Border Protection that your airline confirms before boarding.

The application is not difficult, though Czech spelling and Czech travel habits create a few traps of their own. Háčky and čárky have no place on the form, women's surnames differ from their husbands', and a beach holiday in Cuba can quietly disqualify someone who has never given immigration rules a thought. Each of these is covered below.

Eligibility

Do Czech citizens need an ESTA for the USA?

Yes. Czech citizens entering the United States without a visa need an approved ESTA, and there is no exception for brief stops. Someone flying from Prague to Costa Rica with a two-hour connection in Atlanta is treated as entering the country and must hold one, just like a visitor staying three weeks.

The rule extends beyond airports. A cruise that calls at Miami or Seattle requires it, and so, since 2022, does driving down from Vancouver or walking over the bridge at Niagara Falls. Czechs spending a working-holiday year in Canada should arrange it before any weekend trip south.

Certain travel histories close the waiver off. Having been in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021 is the one that catches Czechs most often, since Varadero has long been a staple of local tour operators' winter brochures. Presence in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen or North Korea since 1 March 2011 has the same consequence, as does holding the nationality of Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan or North Korea alongside Czech citizenship.

What you intend to do there counts as well. Holidays, visits to friends, trade fairs and client meetings are all fine. A summer job at an American camp or resort, of the kind many Czech students take, runs on its own exchange visa and cannot be done on a waiver; nor can a semester of credited study.

What your ESTA allows

  • Tourism, holidays and visiting family or friends
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, conventions and contract negotiation
  • Medical treatment
  • Short recreational courses that carry no credit towards a degree
  • Transit through the United States on the way to another country
  • Unpaid participation in amateur sporting, musical or social events

What it does not cover

  • Employment of any kind for a US employer
  • Study for academic credit — this needs a student visa
  • Work as foreign press, radio, film or other information media
  • Stays longer than 90 days, or extending a stay from inside the country
  • Permanent residence in the United States
  • Paid performances before a paying audience

Stay & validity

How long can Czech citizens stay in the USA?

For a Czech adult the arithmetic is simple. The passport lasts ten years, the ESTA lasts two, and unless the booklet is close to expiry you receive the full term with unlimited entries of up to 90 days each. Children under fifteen hold five-year passports, so their authorisations run out of road sooner.

Road-trippers should understand how the 90 days are measured. The count begins when you are admitted at your first American airport and continues without interruption if you cross into Canada or Mexico. A Czech couple driving from Seattle to Banff and back down to Montana are using the same allowance throughout.

The waiver offers no extension and no conversion to another status once you have landed. Czechs who want a longer stretch, perhaps several months travelling coast to coast in a camper van, need a B-2 visa from the embassy in Prague before departure.

A fresh application is required whenever the passport changes. That includes the new booklet a woman receives after marrying and taking the -ová form of her husband's surname, even if the old authorisation still had a year to run.

Requirements

US ESTA requirements for Czech citizens

Everything Czech passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

A biometric e-passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, carrying the chip symbol on its cover

A valid email address, which is where the decision is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the government ESTA charge and our service fee together

Your home address, phone number and an emergency contact

Employer details and, if you have them, the address of where you are staying in the United States

Specific to Czech passport holders

  • A Czech biometric passport bearing the chip symbol; the občanský průkaz, however convenient within Europe, will not get you onto a flight to the United States
  • Any passport issued on an express basis must also be electronic, so look for the chip symbol on the cover before you rely on it
  • Names entered exactly as the machine-readable zone prints them, with č, ě, ř, š, ž, ů and the long vowels reduced to unaccented letters
  • The feminine surname where that is what your passport shows: Nováková, not Novák, even on a booking made jointly with a husband
  • Academic titles such as Ing. or Mgr. left out entirely, since they are not part of the name on the passport data page
  • A declaration of any visit to Cuba from 12 January 2021 onwards, including all-inclusive package holidays
  • Details of a second citizenship, if you hold one
  • A payment card enabled for international online transactions; the charges are in the live prices shown on this page
  • A personal email address, preferably one you can reach from a phone while driving between national parks

Simple process

How Czech citizens apply for a US ESTA

Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Step 1

Complete the online form

Enter your passport details exactly as printed, your contact and employment information, and answer the eligibility questions. Most applicants finish in about fifteen minutes.

About 15 minutes
Step 2

We review every field

Our team checks your passport number, name spelling, dates and declarations against CBP requirements before anything is submitted.

Error detection included
Step 3

We submit to CBP

Your application goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the government charge paid, and we track its status until a decision is issued.

Usually within 72 hours
Step 4

Your ESTA arrives by email

There is nothing to stick in your passport. The authorisation is held electronically against your passport number, and the airline verifies it when you check in.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Answers to Czech applications generally arrive fast, frequently before the evening of the day you apply. The official recommendation of at least 72 hours exists because a proportion of cases sit in pending for additional checks, and nobody in Prague can influence how long that takes.

Czechs tend to plan American trips a long way out, booking flights in the autumn for the following summer and reserving campsites or lodges the moment national park bookings open. Applying at that stage is sensible, provided the trip falls inside the two-year validity and your passport will not be replaced in the meantime.

If the system declines you, the remaining option is a visitor visa. That means an online form, an appointment and an interview at the embassy on Tržiště in Malá Strana. Leave ample time for it, particularly in spring when exchange-programme students are applying in large numbers.

On arrival

What Czech citizens can expect at the US border

An approved ESTA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

You are inspected by a CBP officer

Visa Waiver travellers are seen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the first American airport they land at, even when connecting onward. The officer takes a photograph and, for most adults, fingerprints.

Your admission is recorded electronically

There is no paper form to fill in on the aircraft. Your arrival record, the I-94, is created digitally and shows the date by which you must leave. You can look it up online afterwards.

Have your plans ready to describe

Expect to be asked where you are staying, for how long and what you do for a living. A return ticket and the address of your first night are usually all it takes.

Allow time at the first airport

Queues at the busiest gateways can run past an hour at peak arrival times. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, leave a generous margin, since you also reclaim and recheck your bags.

Getting there

Flying to the USA from Czech Republic

Prague has limited long-haul service of its own, so most Czech travellers reach America with one connection. Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich, KLM via Amsterdam, Air France via Paris and British Airways via London carry the bulk of the traffic, and seasonal nonstops to the East Coast appear in the summer timetable. Passengers from Brno and Ostrava often find Vienna just as convenient as Prague.

  • Prague Václav Havel (PRG) — New York JFK with Delta in the summer season; check the operating dates before building a trip around it
  • Prague — one stop via Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa to most major US gateways
  • Prague — one stop via Amsterdam, Paris or London for Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami
  • Brno and southern Moravia — coach or train to Vienna for Austrian Airlines' transatlantic departures
About 9 hours nonstop from Prague to New York

Best time to go

When to travel from Czech Republic

The two months of letní prázdniny, July and August, are when most Czech families can travel, and they coincide with the hottest and busiest weeks in the American Southwest. Temperatures in Death Valley and around Las Vegas are extreme then, so anyone bound for the desert parks should plan early starts and midday breaks.

May, June and September suit the classic western circuit far better. The roads through Yellowstone and over the Sierra passes are generally open, the light is good and the crowds thinner. Czechs without school-age children overwhelmingly favour September for exactly this reason.

Jarní prázdniny last a week and rotate by district through February and March. That is prime season in Florida and overlaps in places with American spring break, so beaches at Miami and Clearwater are lively. The autumn break around the 28 October holiday is short but works for New York.

Prague runs six hours ahead of the East Coast and nine ahead of California. Since most Czech itineraries involve a change of planes, door-to-door travel to the West Coast can exceed sixteen hours; arriving a day before collecting a rental car is safer than driving straight from the terminal.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Czech citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Czech Republic — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Treating Cuba as just another beach holiday

Czech agencies have sold Cuban packages for decades, and plenty of travellers have a Havana stamp from the last few years. A visit since 12 January 2021 has to be declared and makes the waiver unavailable, leaving a visa as the only route.

Keeping the háček

Dvořák, Šimek and Růžička must be typed without their diacritics. The safest source is the pair of lines at the bottom of the passport photo page, which already show the name in the stripped-down form American systems expect.

Mixing up Novák and Nováková

One partner often completes both applications and repeats the same surname twice. Each ESTA has to carry the surname in that traveller's own passport, feminine ending included, or the carrier cannot match it at the desk.

Assuming a camp job fits the waiver

Seasonal work programmes in the United States are popular with Czech university students and have their own visa. Turning up on an ESTA with a job offer in your inbox risks a refusal at the border.

Travel to a restricted country

Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and needs a visa instead.

A previous visa refusal or overstay

An earlier refusal of a US visa, a denied entry or a past overstay must be declared. Each one commonly leads to an ESTA being refused and the traveller being directed to apply for a visa.

Passport details that do not match

A single wrong character in the passport number, or an expiry date typed in the wrong order, produces an authorisation the airline cannot find at check-in.

Conditions

ESTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set under the Visa Waiver Program and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day limit and the passport-linking rule catch out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.

The ESTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport, change your name or change citizenship, the ESTA no longer applies and you need a new one.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling under the Visa Waiver Program needs their own ESTA, including babies and children, each linked to that traveller's own e-passport.

Valid for two years, or until your passport expires

An approved ESTA generally lasts two years from the date of authorisation, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.

Multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit

Within its validity you can make repeated trips. Each stay can be up to 90 days, and time spent in Canada, Mexico or the nearby Caribbean islands during a trip counts towards those 90 days.

No extensions and no change of status

A Visa Waiver stay cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another immigration status from inside the United States. Anyone who needs longer must apply for a visa before travelling.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An ESTA lets you board a carrier bound for the United States. Admission is decided by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, your funds and your ties to home.

Consular services

US missions in Czech Republic

The embassy in Malá Strana does not issue or review ESTAs; CBP does that online. Czech citizens go there for visas only, typically for work-and-travel programmes, study, longer visits or after an ESTA has been declined.

FAQs

US ESTA FAQs for Czech citizens

The questions Czech passport holders ask most often about travelling to the United States.

No, Czech citizens do not need a visa for visits of up to 90 days. The Czech Republic has been in the Visa Waiver Program since 2008, so an approved ESTA is enough for tourism, business meetings, medical care or transit. Other purposes require the appropriate visa.

Not if the visit took place on or after 12 January 2021. Czech travellers in that position are generally ineligible for the waiver and need a visitor visa from the embassy in Prague. Trips before that date do not have this effect.

Without any diacritics. Take the spelling from the machine-readable zone of your cestovní pas, where Černý becomes plain capitals, and enter it the same way. The printed version above, with its accents, is not the one to copy.

Two years in most cases, with multiple entries. It ends earlier if the passport expires first, which mainly affects children on five-year passports and adults in the last couple of years of a ten-year booklet.

Nonstop options from Prague are few and concentrated in the summer, chiefly to New York. For the rest of the year, and for western destinations, expect one change at Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris or London.

No. Summer work programmes require an exchange visitor visa arranged through a sponsor and the embassy. An ESTA covers holidays and business visits only, though former participants often use one to return as tourists in later years.

No. A change of name, and the new passport that comes with it, means the previous authorisation can no longer be used. Apply again with the details in the new passport before you next fly.

Yes. Czech citizens have needed an ESTA at land borders since 2022, the same as at airports. Remember that time spent in Canada in the middle of a US trip still counts towards the 90-day limit.
