US ESTA for Danish Citizens

Danes have travelled to the United States visa-free since 1991. An approved ESTA on a Danish e-passport covers visits of up to 90 days, and Copenhagen has the widest choice of nonstop American flights in the Nordic region.

Overview

The US ESTA for Danish citizens

Copenhagen is the main Scandinavian gateway to North America, and Danes make full use of it. New York is a long-weekend destination for many, California and the national parks of the West draw the motorhome crowd, and Danish companies with large American operations, from pharmaceuticals in New Jersey and North Carolina to wind energy in Colorado, keep the business cabins full throughout the year.

Denmark entered the Visa Waiver Program in 1991. In practice that means a Danish citizen needs no visa for a short visit but must obtain an ESTA beforehand, an online authorisation from U.S. Customs and Border Protection that is stored against the passport number. Staff at Kastrup or Billund will not issue a boarding pass for an American flight without finding it.

Danish applicants rarely have trouble with the questions themselves. Problems come from details: the letters æ, ø and å, a passport close to its expiry, or a trip years ago to a country that now removes eligibility. The sections below take those points one at a time.

Eligibility

Do Danish citizens need an ESTA for the USA?

Yes. Danish citizens entering the United States without a visa need an ESTA whether they arrive by aircraft, by ship or overland from Canada or Mexico, the last of these since 2022. Passengers who are only connecting, say through Atlanta to Costa Rica, are treated as entering the country and need one too.

It is one authorisation per person. A Danish family heading to Florida in the efterårsferie applies for each member individually, and a child's application uses the child's own passport. An approval for a parent says nothing about anybody else in the party.

Certain travel and nationality histories close the waiver. Danes who have been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen or North Korea at any time from 1 March 2011, or in Cuba from 12 January 2021, are generally ineligible and must seek a visa. Danish citizens who are also nationals of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, North Korea or Cuba are in the same position. Cuba deserves a special mention, because it has been a well-liked Danish winter-sun destination.

The waiver covers holidays, family visits, business meetings, medical care and transit. It does not cover being hired by an American company, enrolling for credit at a US college or reporting for Danish media, each of which needs its own visa before departure.

What your ESTA allows

  • Tourism, holidays and visiting family or friends
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, conventions and contract negotiation
  • Medical treatment
  • Short recreational courses that carry no credit towards a degree
  • Transit through the United States on the way to another country
  • Unpaid participation in amateur sporting, musical or social events

What it does not cover

  • Employment of any kind for a US employer
  • Study for academic credit — this needs a student visa
  • Work as foreign press, radio, film or other information media
  • Stays longer than 90 days, or extending a stay from inside the country
  • Permanent residence in the United States
  • Paid performances before a paying audience

Stay & validity

How long can Danish citizens stay in the USA?

An approved ESTA usually runs for two years, with any number of visits of up to 90 days. Adult Danish passports are valid for ten years, so most applicants receive the whole period. If the passport has less than two years to go, the authorisation simply stops when the passport does, and a new booklet from the borgerservice means a new application.

Danish children's passports are valid for a shorter time than adults', and those issued to the very youngest for shorter still. On a family application it is the child's expiry date that tends to cut the authorisation short, so parents should not assume everyone's ESTA ends on the same day.

The day count begins on arrival and keeps running through side trips to neighbouring countries. A Dane who spends six weeks in California, drives down to Baja for ten days and comes back north is on day fifty-two, not day one. Nothing done inside the United States can add to the 90.

Requirements

US ESTA requirements for Danish citizens

Everything Danish passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

A biometric e-passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, carrying the chip symbol on its cover

A valid email address, which is where the decision is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the government ESTA charge and our service fee together

Your home address, phone number and an emergency contact

Employer details and, if you have them, the address of where you are staying in the United States

Specific to Danish passport holders

  • A Danish e-passport bearing the chip symbol; a driving licence or the yellow health card is of no use at a US border
  • Names typed as they are spelled in the machine-readable zone under the photo, where æ, ø and å are converted to plain letters
  • Every forename shown in the passport, in the same sequence, plus any mellemnavn exactly where the document puts it
  • Passport number, date of issue and date of expiry read from the photo page and checked twice
  • A truthful list of other nationalities held now or in the past
  • Disclosure of any stay since March 2011 in the countries that end eligibility, and of any trip to Cuba since January 2021
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments; see the live prices shown on this page for the amount
  • An email account you can reach from abroad, because the outcome is sent there

Simple process

How Danish citizens apply for a US ESTA

Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Step 1

Complete the online form

Enter your passport details exactly as printed, your contact and employment information, and answer the eligibility questions. Most applicants finish in about fifteen minutes.

About 15 minutes
Step 2

We review every field

Our team checks your passport number, name spelling, dates and declarations against CBP requirements before anything is submitted.

Error detection included
Step 3

We submit to CBP

Your application goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the government charge paid, and we track its status until a decision is issued.

Usually within 72 hours
Step 4

Your ESTA arrives by email

There is nothing to stick in your passport. The authorisation is held electronically against your passport number, and the airline verifies it when you check in.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Decisions for Danish travellers mostly arrive the same day. CBP asks people to apply at least 72 hours before they fly, which allows for the cases that are marked pending and take longer to resolve.

Danes often book American trips around fixed points in the calendar, such as week 42, week 7 and the three weeks of the industrial summer holiday in July. Applying when the tickets are bought, not in the final days before those peaks, removes the only real risk in the process.

Anyone who turns out to be ineligible has to apply for a visitor visa and attend an interview at the embassy on Dag Hammarskjölds Allé in Copenhagen. For travellers from Jutland that is a day's journey in itself, so it pays to establish early whether an old holiday in Havana or a posting in Baghdad has changed your position.

On arrival

What Danish citizens can expect at the US border

An approved ESTA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

You are inspected by a CBP officer

Visa Waiver travellers are seen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the first American airport they land at, even when connecting onward. The officer takes a photograph and, for most adults, fingerprints.

Your admission is recorded electronically

There is no paper form to fill in on the aircraft. Your arrival record, the I-94, is created digitally and shows the date by which you must leave. You can look it up online afterwards.

Have your plans ready to describe

Expect to be asked where you are staying, for how long and what you do for a living. A return ticket and the address of your first night are usually all it takes.

Allow time at the first airport

Queues at the busiest gateways can run past an hour at peak arrival times. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, leave a generous margin, since you also reclaim and recheck your bags.

Getting there

Flying to the USA from Denmark

Copenhagen Kastrup is the long-haul base of SAS and offers nonstop flights to both American coasts, which sets Denmark apart from its neighbours. Travellers from Aarhus, Aalborg and Billund normally connect through Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Frankfurt. With so many nonstops, Danes usually meet a CBP officer at their final destination and avoid a domestic connection altogether.

  • Copenhagen (CPH) — New York JFK and Newark with SAS, joined by Delta and United on a seasonal basis
  • Copenhagen — Boston, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare and Atlanta with SAS
  • Copenhagen — Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle with SAS, some of them summer-only
  • Copenhagen — Miami with SAS, timed mainly for the winter season
  • Billund and Aalborg — one stop via Amsterdam with KLM or via Copenhagen with SAS

Best time to go

When to travel from Denmark

The vinterferie in week 7 or 8 is Denmark's best match for Florida and for skiing in Colorado or Utah. Florida is dry and pleasantly warm in February, while Copenhagen is at its greyest, and the hurricane months are long past.

July is when Denmark shuts down for its summer holiday, and it is also the most crowded and expensive month in American resorts and national parks. Families tied to school dates have little choice, but couples and retirees do far better in May, early June or September, when the weather in the West is settled and Yosemite or the Grand Canyon can be enjoyed without queues.

Week 42 lands in mid-October. New York and New England are superb then, with autumn colour and mild days. Florida and the Gulf coast are still inside hurricane season, so an efterårsferie at the beach is best booked with flexible terms.

Clocks in New York run six hours behind Copenhagen and those in Los Angeles nine. Westbound SAS departures leave Kastrup around midday and reach the East Coast in mid-afternoon, a pattern that makes it easy to stay awake until a normal local bedtime on the first night.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Danish citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Denmark — we check for every one of them before submitting.

A past holiday in Cuba

Varadero and Havana were regular charter destinations from Denmark. A visit on or after 12 January 2021 has to be declared and takes the traveller out of the waiver. Many Danes find this out only when the application is refused.

Writing Søren or Kjær with Danish letters

The application form has no æ, ø or å. Take the spelling from the machine-readable lines of the passport instead of improvising a conversion, so that the record matches what is read from the chip at Kastrup.

Relying on a child's expired passport

Because Danish passports for children run out sooner than their parents', it is common for one member of the family to be travelling on a document that has lapsed since the last trip. The ESTA lapsed with it.

Misplacing the mellemnavn

Many Danes carry a middle surname such as Nørgaard before a final Jensen. Whether it sits with the given names or the surname in the passport determines where it goes on the form, and guessing produces a mismatch.

Travel to a restricted country

Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and needs a visa instead.

A previous visa refusal or overstay

An earlier refusal of a US visa, a denied entry or a past overstay must be declared. Each one commonly leads to an ESTA being refused and the traveller being directed to apply for a visa.

Passport details that do not match

A single wrong character in the passport number, or an expiry date typed in the wrong order, produces an authorisation the airline cannot find at check-in.

Conditions

ESTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set under the Visa Waiver Program and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day limit and the passport-linking rule catch out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.

The ESTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport, change your name or change citizenship, the ESTA no longer applies and you need a new one.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling under the Visa Waiver Program needs their own ESTA, including babies and children, each linked to that traveller's own e-passport.

Valid for two years, or until your passport expires

An approved ESTA generally lasts two years from the date of authorisation, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.

Multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit

Within its validity you can make repeated trips. Each stay can be up to 90 days, and time spent in Canada, Mexico or the nearby Caribbean islands during a trip counts towards those 90 days.

No extensions and no change of status

A Visa Waiver stay cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another immigration status from inside the United States. Anyone who needs longer must apply for a visa before travelling.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An ESTA lets you board a carrier bound for the United States. Admission is decided by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, your funds and your ties to home.

US missions in Denmark

Neither the embassy in Copenhagen nor the consulate in Nuuk handles ESTA applications, which are decided online. Danish citizens turn to the embassy for a visa interview when their trip or their history falls outside the Visa Waiver Program.

FAQs

US ESTA FAQs for Danish citizens

The questions Danish passport holders ask most often about travelling to the United States.

No. Danish citizens may visit the United States for up to 90 days without a visa, as long as they have an approved ESTA before travelling. Work, credit-bearing study, journalism and longer stays are the situations that require a visa.

It depends on the date. If you were in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021 you are generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and need a visitor visa from the embassy in Copenhagen. Earlier visits do not have this effect.

Two years in most cases, or until the passport expires if that comes first. Adults with ten-year Danish passports generally get the full term; children, whose passports are shorter, often do not.

As they appear in the machine-readable zone at the foot of the passport photo page. The form accepts only the standard alphabet, and the plain-letter rendering printed there is the one the airline checks.

SAS serves a broad set of American cities from Kastrup, including New York, Boston, Washington, Chicago and several on the West Coast, with some routes operating only in summer or winter. Schedules shift each season, so confirm before booking.

Yes, each child needs a separate authorisation tied to a personal e-passport. Children cannot be included on a parent's application, whatever their age.

No. Study that earns credit towards a qualification requires a student visa. The waiver allows only short recreational courses that carry no credit.

At least 72 hours ahead is the official recommendation, and at the time of booking is better. Most answers come fast, but a pending case during the week 42 rush leaves little room to recover.
