US ESTA for Maltese Citizens

Malta joined the Visa Waiver Program in 2008, so a Maltese e-passport and an approved ESTA are enough for up to 90 days in the United States. Most journeys connect through a European hub, and the authorisation is checked before you leave Luqa.

Overview

The US ESTA for Maltese citizens

For a country of barely half a million people, Malta has a surprising number of links with the United States. Maltese families emigrated to Detroit, New York and San Francisco through the last century, the islands' gaming, finance and aviation firms do steady business with American partners, and a new generation simply wants to see New York, Florida and the West Coast for themselves.

Malta joined the Visa Waiver Program in 2008, alongside the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Baltic states. From then on Maltese citizens no longer needed a visitor visa for a short trip, only an ESTA, the online travel authorisation administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Because English is an official language, the form itself holds few surprises for Maltese applicants. The points that do need care are local ones: dotted and barred letters in Maltese surnames, past trips across the water to Libya, and the fact that reaching America nearly always involves a change of aircraft somewhere in Europe.

Eligibility

Do Maltese citizens need an ESTA for the USA?

A Maltese citizen heading to the United States for 90 days or fewer needs an ESTA and nothing more in the way of entry paperwork. It applies to holidaymakers, business visitors, patients travelling for treatment and passengers in transit, and it is required whether you arrive by air, on a cruise ship or by road from Canada or Mexico, the last since 2022.

The Maltese identity card works for a weekend in Sicily but not for this. An electronic passport is essential, and the authorisation is individual: a couple travelling with two children make four applications, one against each passport.

Libya deserves a paragraph of its own. Tripoli is a short flight from Luqa, and Maltese businesspeople, oil and gas workers, medics and aid staff have crossed regularly for decades. Anyone who has set foot there on or after 1 March 2011 is, with narrow exceptions, shut out of the Visa Waiver Program and has to apply for a visa.

An ESTA will not cover paid work, a degree programme, media assignments or a stay of more than 90 days. If you have been refused an American visa before, or were once turned away at a US airport, expect the application to be declined and plan on the B-1/B-2 visa through the embassy at Ta' Qali.

What your ESTA allows

  • Tourism, holidays and visiting family or friends
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, conventions and contract negotiation
  • Medical treatment
  • Short recreational courses that carry no credit towards a degree
  • Transit through the United States on the way to another country
  • Unpaid participation in amateur sporting, musical or social events

What it does not cover

  • Employment of any kind for a US employer
  • Study for academic credit — this needs a student visa
  • Work as foreign press, radio, film or other information media
  • Stays longer than 90 days, or extending a stay from inside the country
  • Permanent residence in the United States
  • Paid performances before a paying audience

Stay & validity

How long can Maltese citizens stay in the USA?

Approval normally gives two years of validity and any number of entries, each for up to 90 days. That suits the Maltese pattern of one big American trip followed, a year or so later, by another.

Adult Maltese passports last ten years, so most applicants get the full two-year term. The exceptions are children, whose passports are issued for much shorter periods, and adults in the final stretch of their passport. In both cases the authorisation ends on the passport's expiry date, and the next passport needs a new one.

Maltese travellers often combine the United States with something else on the same ticket: a Caribbean cruise out of Miami, a few days in Toronto with relatives, a week in Mexico. All of that time is added to the 90-day count, and the stay cannot be extended locally. Women who adopt or drop a married surname, and anyone issued a replacement passport, must apply afresh.

Requirements

US ESTA requirements for Maltese citizens

Everything Maltese passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

A biometric e-passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, carrying the chip symbol on its cover

A valid email address, which is where the decision is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the government ESTA charge and our service fee together

Your home address, phone number and an emergency contact

Employer details and, if you have them, the address of where you are staying in the United States

Specific to Maltese passport holders

  • A Maltese electronic passport showing the chip symbol; the identity card is not accepted for the United States
  • Surname and given names as printed, with the Maltese letters ċ, ġ, ħ and ż entered the way the machine-readable lines show them, so Żammit is ZAMMIT and Buttiġieġ is BUTTIGIEG
  • Double-barrelled and maiden-plus-married surnames typed in full if that is how the passport records them
  • The passport number from the photo page, checked character by character
  • A truthful answer about any time spent in Libya since 1 March 2011, whether for work, family or a crossing by sea
  • The same disclosure for Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Somalia and Yemen from that date, and for Cuba from 12 January 2021
  • A credit or debit card set up for international online payments
  • An email address you will be able to open during a connection in a European hub
  • Your own application for each traveller, including infants, each matched to that person's passport

Simple process

How Maltese citizens apply for a US ESTA

Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Step 1

Complete the online form

Enter your passport details exactly as printed, your contact and employment information, and answer the eligibility questions. Most applicants finish in about fifteen minutes.

About 15 minutes
Step 2

We review every field

Our team checks your passport number, name spelling, dates and declarations against CBP requirements before anything is submitted.

Error detection included
Step 3

We submit to CBP

Your application goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the government charge paid, and we track its status until a decision is issued.

Usually within 72 hours
Step 4

Your ESTA arrives by email

There is nothing to stick in your passport. The authorisation is held electronically against your passport number, and the airline verifies it when you check in.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Allow 72 hours at the very least, which is what CBP recommends. Many Maltese applications are settled within minutes or hours, but pending cases exist and cannot be hurried.

The connection adds a wrinkle. When you fly Malta to Frankfurt or London and on to the United States on one booking, the ESTA is normally verified at Malta International Airport before the first leg, not at the hub. A missing authorisation therefore stops the journey at home, with the long-haul seat lost along with the short one.

Apply when you book. If your trip falls in the peak weeks, right after schools close at the end of June or around the Santa Marija holiday in mid-August, flights through the hubs are full and a missed departure may be impossible to rebook for days.

On arrival

What Maltese citizens can expect at the US border

An approved ESTA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

You are inspected by a CBP officer

Visa Waiver travellers are seen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the first American airport they land at, even when connecting onward. The officer takes a photograph and, for most adults, fingerprints.

Your admission is recorded electronically

There is no paper form to fill in on the aircraft. Your arrival record, the I-94, is created digitally and shows the date by which you must leave. You can look it up online afterwards.

Have your plans ready to describe

Expect to be asked where you are staying, for how long and what you do for a living. A return ticket and the address of your first night are usually all it takes.

Allow time at the first airport

Queues at the busiest gateways can run past an hour at peak arrival times. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, leave a generous margin, since you also reclaim and recheck your bags.

Getting there

Flying to the USA from Malta

Until recently every journey from Malta to the United States meant a change of planes. Delta altered that in June 2026 with a summer-season nonstop between Malta and New York JFK, flown a few times a week; check whether it is running for your dates. The rest of the year, and for any other American city, Maltese travellers connect through a European hub with KM Malta Airlines or a foreign carrier.

  • Malta (MLA) — New York JFK with Delta, summer season only
  • Malta — London Heathrow, then onward to most US gateways with British Airways, American Airlines or Virgin Atlantic
  • Malta — Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa or KM Malta Airlines, connecting to Lufthansa and United flights
  • Malta — Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Rome or Istanbul for one-stop itineraries to the East Coast, Florida and California

Best time to go

When to travel from Malta

Maltese schools break up at the end of June and do not return until late September, one of the longest summer holidays in Europe. The last three weeks of that stretch are the opportunity: American schools are back, queues at Orlando's parks shorten, and the heat in the south-western national parks begins to ease.

Heat is not something a Maltese visitor needs to cross an ocean for, so winter and the shoulder seasons hold more appeal than they might for northern Europeans. New York in December, with snow a real possibility, is a favourite, and the carnival break in February suits skiing in Colorado or a week in California.

Summer brings the village festa season at home and peak fares abroad. If August is your only option, remember that Florida and the Gulf Coast are in hurricane season from June to November, and that the parks out west are at their fullest between June and September.

Malta is six hours ahead of the American East Coast and nine ahead of the Pacific coast. With a connection, door-to-door travel time to California can pass twenty hours, so think about breaking the trip in New York or resting on arrival rather than driving straight from the airport.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Maltese citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Malta — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Leaving Libya off the travel history

Work trips to Tripoli, Misrata or the offshore fields were routine for many Maltese, and they feel too ordinary to count. They do count if they took place on or after 1 March 2011. Omitting them is a misstatement, and declaring them means the visa route is the right one.

Typing Maltese characters into the form

The dotted ċ, ġ and ż and the barred ħ do not exist in the passport's machine-readable lines, where they appear as plain C, G, Z and H. Entering Ħ or adding substitute letters creates a name that does not match. Follow the capitals at the bottom of the photo page.

Assuming the hub will sort it out

Some travellers think an ESTA can be dealt with during the layover in London or Frankfurt. In practice the airline checks for it before you leave Malta, and an application lodged at the gate may still be pending when boarding closes.

Using an ESTA issued under a previous surname

Maltese women frequently hold passports in a married or double surname and later renew in a different form. An authorisation granted under the earlier name and passport number is no longer usable. Apply again once the new passport is in hand.

Travel to a restricted country

Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and needs a visa instead.

A previous visa refusal or overstay

An earlier refusal of a US visa, a denied entry or a past overstay must be declared. Each one commonly leads to an ESTA being refused and the traveller being directed to apply for a visa.

Passport details that do not match

A single wrong character in the passport number, or an expiry date typed in the wrong order, produces an authorisation the airline cannot find at check-in.

Conditions

ESTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set under the Visa Waiver Program and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day limit and the passport-linking rule catch out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.

The ESTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport, change your name or change citizenship, the ESTA no longer applies and you need a new one.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling under the Visa Waiver Program needs their own ESTA, including babies and children, each linked to that traveller's own e-passport.

Valid for two years, or until your passport expires

An approved ESTA generally lasts two years from the date of authorisation, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.

Multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit

Within its validity you can make repeated trips. Each stay can be up to 90 days, and time spent in Canada, Mexico or the nearby Caribbean islands during a trip counts towards those 90 days.

No extensions and no change of status

A Visa Waiver stay cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another immigration status from inside the United States. Anyone who needs longer must apply for a visa before travelling.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An ESTA lets you board a carrier bound for the United States. Admission is decided by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, your funds and your ties to home.

Consular services

US missions in Malta

The United States is represented in Malta by its embassy at Ta' Qali, near Attard. It has no involvement in ESTA applications, which never require a visit or an interview. Maltese citizens who need a visa instead, typically because of travel to Libya or an earlier refusal, arrange an appointment with its consular section.

FAQs

US ESTA FAQs for Maltese citizens

The questions Maltese passport holders ask most often about travelling to the United States.

No. Maltese citizens may visit the United States for up to 90 days without a visa, on condition that they hold an approved ESTA before departure. Malta has been a Visa Waiver Program country since 2008. Tourism, business visits, medical treatment and transit are covered; work and study for credit are not.

It depends on the date. Presence in Libya on or after 1 March 2011 generally makes a Maltese citizen ineligible for the Visa Waiver Program, and a visitor visa is needed instead. Visits that ended before that date do not have this consequence.

Delta began a nonstop between Malta and New York JFK in June 2026, operating in the summer season a few times a week. Outside those months, and for other cities, you connect through hubs such as London, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris or Istanbul. Either way the ESTA is checked before you leave Malta.

Type it as it appears in the machine-readable lines of your passport, where the special letters are replaced by Z, G, C and H. Do not add extra letters to imitate the Maltese sound.

Generally two years, with multiple entries of up to 90 days each. It expires earlier if your passport does, which mainly affects children's passports and adult ones close to renewal.

Yes. You enter the United States when you land in Miami to join the ship, so a valid ESTA is needed from the outset. Days spent at Caribbean ports during the trip count towards your 90.

No. The identity card is valid for travel within the European Union only. For the United States you need a biometric passport, and each family member needs one of their own along with a separate ESTA.

CBP recommends at least 72 hours. Because a Maltese itinerary often involves two flights on one ticket, applying on the day you book is the safer habit; a pending status discovered at Luqa cannot be fixed in time.
